Jessie Allen
June 6, 1917 - April 9, 2012
Jessie Allen, (nee Thornton), passed peacefully in her 95th year. She leaves behind her son James Thornton Riley, daughter Marjorie Phyllis Bond, sister Florence Meron, daughter-in-law Kathleen Riley, son-in-law Peter Bond, grandchildren Patti Dee Bond, Kenneth Pantlin, Kristina Riley, Mathew Riley, great grand children Jason and Brendan Bond, and James Konner.
Born in Toronto, Jessie was married at the age of 18 to James Waterman Riley with whom she had two children, James and Marjorie. Jessie was the oldest of five children some of whom she looked after during the great depression. With the outbreak of WWII, Jessie worked in an aircraft factory. Afterwards, she and James invested their savings in the risky post war building boom in Toronto. Homes were built and sold for $2,500 and taking back mortgages for the full purchase price was not unusual as few had any savings.
James passed away in 1968. Jessie was fortunate to meet Frederick Thomas Allen who was also widowed and the two were married and spent a happy life together for 41 years until his passing in 2010. She considered herself to be blessed to have had two wonderful husbands and a fulfilling and happy life. For the last year she resided happily at the Gibson Retirement Home in North York where she met and enjoyed the company of new friends with whom she played bridge and participated in other activities. Unfortunately, she required surgery for an illness and despite everyone's best efforts she was unable to recover.
Jessie was a straight talker who treated everyone throughout her life with honesty and candor. She was hard working, independent and self-reliant like many people of her generation. Jessie left this life with few regrets. To her, family was everything. She will be greatly missed.
