Jean Margaret Troop (nee Irvine) passed away on October 9th, 2012 due to complications following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Jean's husband Andy died unexpectedly in 1998 while they were vacationing together on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean. They were married for 46 years. The loss of Andy was intensely painful for Jean, but she carried on for 14 more years as an independent woman, finding solace in her friends, family and life passions.

Jean Irvine grew up in the small farming community of Letellier in southern Manitoba, living and working on the family farm. She was the first child of Kenneth Argyle Irvine and Violet Hilda Irvine (nee Nichols). She eventually attended teachers college and accepted one of her first jobs in Flin Flon, Manitoba. It was there that she met Andrew John Troop and they were married on August 2, 1952. Andy's work in the mining industry brought them to Toronto in the mid-1950's and they eventually settled in the Guildwood Village area of Scarborough. Jean would remain a resident of this area for the rest of her life.

Jean was an accomplished musician as a vocalist and pianist, and an artist in a wide variety of mediums. She worked for many years as a primary school teacher in Scarborough. Jean was very proud of graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction from University of Toronto in 1991. After she stopped working, Jean's life was full of activities including travel, art appreciation, bridge clubs and worship and volunteer work at the Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church. Her many prized possessions - books, art and artifacts - reflected her interests and passions throughout her life.

Jean asked that this poem written in 1932 by Mary Elizabeth Frye, a Baltimore housewife, be shared on her passing.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

Jean is survived by her only son, Grant Troop (of Toronto) and her grandaughters Robyn and Megan, and by her sister Beverly Mozell (of Calgary) and her brothers Neil Irvine (of Chevy Chase, Maryland) and Jack Irvine (of Winnipeg). Friends and family everywhere mourn her loss.
