James "Whistles" Wilson
January 10, 1949 - November 7, 2014
Jimmie “Whistles” Wilson – husband, father, grandfather, brother and son - died on November 7, 2014 in Toronto, ON. He was 65.
Jimmie was born on January 10, 1949 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to his parents, James Henry Wilson and Helen Canary. During challenging economic times, Jimmie and his sister, Sharon, moved with their parents to Toronto, ON in 1969 with hopes of better life opportunities.
Love at first sight, in the form of Elizabeth “Liz” Tarala, struck him in his early adult years, and he married her shortly after in 1973. Together they built a home and a family, with their two children, Bill and Lyndsay.
Jimmie was a loyal and supportive man with a passion for sports. With a strong, competitive nature, he played hockey and baseball ferociously, proving to be a force not be reckoned with. Passing on this love for athleticism, he committed his time to coaching, enforcing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. In later life, he devoted himself to being an avid golfer.
Regularly seen as a tough man, Jimmie’s sensitive side had a tendency to surface when it came to the pride he had for his children. For instance, seeing Bill and Lyndsay sing at family events guaranteed to bring tears to his eyes.
Jimmie will be remembered for his dedication to his family and friends. Protective and strong-willed, he loved to make those in his life laugh. Always encouraging to those around him, he was an easy-going individual, able to chat with anyone.
Jimmie is survived by his wife, Liz; his children, Bill and Lyndsay; his mother, Helen; his sister, Sharon; his brother-in-law, Dave; and his grandson, Liam.
A celebration of life will take place on November 11, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at Pine Hills Cemetery and Visitation Centre. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jimmie’s life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Diabetes Association. Jimmie will be fondly remembered by all of his family and friends.
