With his family by his side, Jack Jin passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital on Thursday April 2, 2026, at the golden age of 88.
Jack was born on February 15, 1938 in Lung Kai Lei village, outside of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, China. Jack emigrated to Canada when he was 11 and grew up in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood in Toronto. Jack attended Jessie Ketchum Public School until age 16, when he left school to support his dad’s business, Yen Chong Hand Laundry.
Through a wonderful streak of luck, a matchmaker introduced Jack to a beautiful young woman from Hong Kong, Helen Yu. They married in 1959 and had 4 sons, Edward, Richard, Howard and Bernard. Over the years Jack and Helen not only raised their sons, but opened no less than 2 laundry businesses, 2 restaurants, a variety store and a flower shop. Jack retired from his entrepreneurial life and spent a decade refining his golf swing and tennis skills while working at the Bayview Country Club. Jack was never one for a sleepy retirement as he adopted hobbies like bonsai, badminton, guitar and mahjong.
Jack will forever be remembered as the gregarious and generous friend who everyone loved. With Helen, they were the dinner hosts to 100’s of family and friends over the years at their homes in Scarborough, Pickering and Harbourfront. If you are reading this then surely you have been invited to dim sum with Jack. His infectious good nature touched everyone and he will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Jack is survived by his sons Edward, Howard, Bernard and daughter-in-law, Paula. His sister-in-law, Lesley and nieces Ashley, Victoria and great uncle to Noah. Proud grandfather to Anneka, Serge, Sabrina, Luca and Elle. Jack was predeceased by loving wife Helen (2009), son Richard (2023), brothers Jim (2020) and Handy (2025), sister-in-law Betty (2022) and his parents Poy Ark and Chu See.
Visitation will be held on Friday April 10 from 5 to 8 PM at York Cemetery & Funeral Centre (160 Beecroft Road, North York). A funeral service to celebrate Jack’s life will follow in the chapel on April 11, 2026, 1-3 PM. In lieu of flowers we’d like to suggest a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
