JACK CLIFFORD SPENCER
1925 - 2015
Second World War Veteran
Our dad was an RCAF tail gunner, an electrician, a husband and a father who liked to joke to his two daughters that he was really James Bond in disguise and who started many a dinner conversation when we were young by making up a mystery story with the words, "Well, I was called in on a case..."
Born in Oshawa to George Spencer and Florence (née Gyatt), he lost his mother early, but felt the love and support of a stepmother and many siblings: Rene, Carl, Joan, Brent, Wallace and Vic. He met our mother while roller-skating - the hot date activity of his era - and together he and Jean (née Stevens, who survives him), reared Barbara and Christina (Tina). Along the way he obtained a black belt in judo, fished many a trout stream, joined the Masonic Lodge and taught himself golf. He was a proud member of 444 Wing. He also slogged a lot of paintings around for Jean, an amateur artist in Scarborough.
Outnumbered in his household by women, Jack was nonetheless proud of his three "girls" and was soon blessed with grandsons to even out the gender balance: Sean (married to Amy) and Adam. He is also survived by two great-grandsons, Daniel and Kian, and by son-in-law Don.
He spent his last four years at Sunnybrook Hospital in the Veterans Wing, where he received great care and affection, for which we are all grateful. We marked his 90th birthday there last month.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, March 7th at 2:30 p.m. at Elgin Mills Crematorium, 1591 Elgin Mills Rd. East, L4S 1M9, 905-737-1720. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, we urge a donation to Sunnybrook Veterans Comfort Fund c/o Sunnybrook Foundation H359, 2075 Bayview Ave.,
