James Michael Colin Claxton – Colin – passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in Toronto, surrounded by his wife and children. Beloved husband of 38 years to Shauna; cherished father to Matthew (Maliha), Keshia (Sunny), and Jonathan (Teighan); dear grandfather to Leonel, Levi, Malik, and Lucie; devoted brother to Jackie (Mitchell), Hazel (Jude), Dug, and Gregory. He now rests peacefully with his parents, Cynthia (née Amory) and Earl Claxton; his brother, Bryan; and his adored dogs, Bree and Rosie. Colin will be remembered for his love of family, charismatic energy, candid humour, and unrelenting grit.
Colin was born in London, England, in 1957. His parents were members of the Windrush generation who migrated from St. Kitts and Nevis in 1955, then to Canada in 1965. A graduate of Ryerson University's architecture program, Colin built an accomplished career in the field of construction management and development, with clients spanning the private, public, and non-profit sectors. His practice took him far and wide, establishing a reputation for his direct approach and unique ability to unite diverse stakeholders around a common goal. He took great pride in sharing his knowledge, passing along skills to his children and colleagues alike, and serving as a past lecturer in Ryerson’s architecture program. His advice – sometimes blunt but always sincere – pushed others to do their best and believe in themselves.
Colin was equally devoted to his community, serving as a longtime member and past president of the Toronto Beach Rotary Club, and as a past co-chair of the Riverside Business Improvement Association. Notably, he lent his construction expertise to the Riverside Gateway Bridge Project, which saw the revitalization of one of Toronto’s architectural landmarks.
Colin lived a life rich with passions – for sport, music, and the open road. Following in his father’s footsteps, he developed a deep love for the game of soccer – as a lifelong Chelsea FC supporter, competitive player, and dedicated coach to many of his children’s teams. His love of music was shaped by the Motown era and the sounds of Stevie Wonder, which stayed with him into his final days. Colin’s fascination with motorcycles began at a young age, sparked by his father’s own love of bikes and work as a master mechanic. He later completed a cross-country motorcycle journey through Canada and the United States alongside close friends.
More than anything, Colin’s heart belonged to his family. His greatest joy was found in the life he built with his wife and the deep pride he felt for their children. He loved them fiercely and without condition. His home reflected that love – built in part with his own hands, and often alongside his children, teaching them the same lessons in care and craft that guided his work.
Colin faced every challenge life gave him with quiet determination, remarkable strength, and unwavering positivity. He was defined by his trademark perseverance. Despite health complications, Colin gathered the strength earlier this summer to attend his youngest son’s wedding in Toronto. He was also a steadfast advocate for his many friends and fellow members in the dialysis community, championing their well-being with empathy and resolve. Even in life’s hardest moments, he showed up for the people he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private interment is taking place in October. A memorial service and reception will be held at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre on Saturday, November 29, 2025, with a family visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m., service at 2:00 p.m., and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation, in gratitude for the tireless care and support shown to Colin and his family. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Paul Das, Dr. Charles de Mestral, and Nat Rave, D.Ch., as well as to the St. Michael's Hospital dialysis team and broader care staff for their extraordinary care and dedication over many years.
