Ita Patricia Mayall
January 26, 1924 - May 27, 2012
Ita Patricia Veronica Mayall (nee Kaye)
Peacefully in hospital surrounded by her family, on May 27th in her 88th year. Predeceased by her husband, Basil Raymond, and daughter, Jacquelyn Francis, Ita leaves behind her children, Ann, Paul and John, and their spouses, and grandchildren Christine, Mark, Paulina and Basil.
Born in London, England, on January 26, 1924, Ita stayed there until her 30s, apart from a year and a half living in South Africa. During WWII, Ita spent four years in the WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service), during which time she was also lead vocal in a band, being a talented singer. In 1954, Ita travelled by ocean liner to Pennsylvania, U.S.A., where she married her husband (who she knew from England) and had their first child, before moving to Canada and having three more children. A trophy-winning tennis player, Mum became a youth tennis coach, and a Class B Umpire on the professional circuit, the only woman willing to be a linesman at the famous tennis match at Maple Leaf Gardens between Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, known for their nasty tempers. Ita will be lovingly remembered for her incredible intelligence, memory, wit and wisdom; her knowledge of life and world affairs and the English language; and for her homemade bread, which is second to none.
A celebration of Ita's life will be held on Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Meadowvale Visitation Centre 1-888-277-2643. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
