Irene Mildred Mathias
February 20, 1921 - September 7, 2014
Mathias, Irene M. (nee Everitt)
With sad resignation we announce the passing of Irene Mildred Mathias. Irene slipped away quietly on Sunday September 7/14, surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband Ernest ( Mat) in 1973. Irene is survived by her children Catherine (James), Martin ( Karen) and Stella ( Tom), as well as her grandchildren Dustin, Alexandra, Stephanie (Cade), Anastasia (Sean), Cameron and Daniel.
Born in England in 1921, Irene served in the British Army at Bletchley Park during the Second world War. Following the war, she came to ontario with Mat to work and start a family. Over the years, despite the loss of her husband and living with multiple sclerosis, Irene always maintained a strong and good natured reserve, bolstered by many cups of tea and a few glasses of sherry.
The family will receive friends at THE SIMPLE ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL CENTRE 275 Lesmiill Road, Toronto. on Wednesday September 10, 2014 from 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at Sunnybrook Hospital Chapel ( E Wing) 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto on Thursday September 11, 2014 at 10am. Interment will take place at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Trenton that same day at 2 pm.
The family would like to recognize and express its deep gratitude for the work, service and companionship of the staff, volunteers and residents of Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, especially those of K2E, where Mum lived her life with dignity and comfort for many years. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Sunnybrook's Veterans Comfort Fund or Operation Raise a Flag would be appreciated.
