Irene Martin
August 27, 1917 - December 30, 2014
MARTIN, IRENE MAY - Surrounded by love, Irene May Martin passed away on December 30, 2014, in her 98th year. Born in England, Irene had come to Canada when she was four years old with her parents, Richard and Annie Pocock and brother Len and was always proud of her British heritage. In 1940, she joined with her great love, Harry Martin (predeceased in 2012) and together they built a marriage that lasted 71 years and a life that managed to face the normal ups and downs and still be full of happy times and adventures. Irene was a great hostess and welcomed friends and family to their many homes, the family cottage and their wonderful parties. She and Harry also enjoyed meeting new friends and seeing new places as they travelled the world. However, their main joy was family, and for Irene, her greatest legacy: her children and their spouses, Bill & Coral of Toronto, Bob & Nancy of Peterborough, Lynda Wheeler of Belleville and Jim & Lynda of Toronto; her 10 grandchildren and their spouses and her 16 great grandchildren, who gave her such joy - Lisa & Tyler Bailey (Sarah, Rachel and Hannah), Brad & Dina Martin (Gordie), Suzanne & Mike Stevens (Greg & Emily), Steve & Elizabeth Martin (Madeleine), Scott & Lisa Wheeler (Vivien and Lucius), Chris & Megan Martin (Braeden, Caelin & Penelope), George & Leqin Martin, Charlie & Hayley Martin (Claire and Roger), Jennifer & Jon Lalonde (Emma), David & Lesley Martin (Chloe). Her larger family circle was completed by her brother, Reverend Len Pocock (deceased) and her sister-in-law, Marian Pocock of Vancouver, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Douglas and Jean Martin (deceased) and her many nieces, nephews and cousins here and in Great Britain.
Irene was an amazing lady. She had such a curiosity for life, such wisdom and such a phenomenal spirit and will. She was an expert bridge player but always had time for someone learning the game. She was skilled at rug hooking and other crafts but more often than not, gave away her creations. She had a wonderful sense of fun and was a woman known as much for being “The Judge” and leading the “Hokey Pokey” at cottage regattas as she was for her elegant ballroom dancing with Harry. She lived her life fully and regardless of what she had to face, she did it with indomitable courage and determination in a way that will always be an inspiration to all who knew her.
“Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Irene...”
