Ion “Nelu” Moraru, aged 87, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, following a long battle with cancer.
A devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Nelu will be remembered for his positive disposition, generosity, intellect, and quiet strength. He had a curious mind, a kind heart, and a deep appreciation for family, friendship, learning, and life.
Nelu was born in Bucharest, Romania, on October 29, 1938, to Nicolae and Maria Moraru. He and his younger brother, Puiu, lost their mother when Nelu was just nine years old. They were raised by their father and stepmother, alongside their half-siblings, Gicu, Florea, and Catela.
As an adult, Nelu pursued his passion for science and became a chemist. He worked in a research laboratory and assisted with research at the University of Bucharest, collaborating with researchers from around the world. His dedication and expertise earned him numerous accolades for his contributions to the field of polymer research.
In 1965, Nelu married the love of his life, Georgetta “Zica” Balota. They shared a loving partnership for more than six decades, building a life together filled with family, friendship, travel, and countless cherished memories.
Following the fall of Communism, Nelu and Zica moved to Toronto Canada in 1989 to join the rest of Zica’s family. Their move was supported in part by Magna International, recognizing Nelu and Zica’s area of specialty in polymer research. In Canada, Nelu worked for many years in the Medical Imaging Department at Branson Hospital before retiring.
In his later years, Nelu enjoyed playing Sudoku, reading, and learning about alternative approaches to cancer care. He loved travelling with Zica and their family and was fortunate to visit many parts of the world. He enjoyed sports, particularly tennis, as well as walking and bike riding. Above all, he treasured spending time with his close friends and family whenever possible.
Nelu leaves behind a legacy of love, knowledge, resilience, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Zica, his family, and the many friends whose lives he touched.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to the compassionate care he received by the Palliative Care team on 6 West at Baycrest Hospital who supported Nelu and his family during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Baycrest in memory of Ion Moraru would be gratefully appreciated. https://tributecards.baycrestfoundation.org/
