Henry John Vander Griendt
May 26, 1954 - March 24, 2015
VANDER GRIENDT, Henry John
Peacefully, at home and surrounded by family, in his 61st year. Son of Ben and the late Agnes of Tillsonburg. Loved and missed by his wife Janet and children, Emily (Dave Adams), David, Greg and Ben, brothers, sisters and in-laws. A devoted family man, educator and volunteer.
Henry was the second oldest of 8 children growing up in Tillsonburg where he began playing hockey. Family ties were extremely important to Henry and he was a devoted son to his mother during her extended illness. His faith sustained him through his health challenge and he found comfort in his Catholic upbringing.
He was a tireless volunteer and coach with Brampton Hockey for the past 20 years. His influence on young athletes to play fair, respect the opponent and have fun will be felt for many years. He most recently received Canadian Tire's prestigious Hero of Play award through Hockey Canada and then Kraft/TSN Canada's Top 100 Unsung Hockey Heroes Award.
As an educator, Henry believed that every student could find success and in his role as teacher and administrator he worked to create learning environments that fostered this success. His 30 year career with the Peel District School Board was rewarding and challenging but Henry worked tirelessly to ensure a job done right.
Family will receive friends on Saturday from 6-9pm, Sunday 2-4pm and 6-9pm at Meadowvale Visitation Centre. Funeral mass on Monday March 30th at 11am, St. Leonard's Catholic Church, Brampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brampton Hockey Inc., Princess Margaret Hospital or the Phyllis Gordon Foundation.
Do not go gently into that good night,
Rage, Rage against the dying of the light...
