GuangCai Gu passed away peacefully at home on 26th August, 2024 at the age of 91. GuangCai was born in AnHui China on 11th November 1933. During his younger years, he struggled until the Chinese Liberation in 1949 were he was able to go to school for the first time at the age of 16. In a very short period, he excelled academically and shortly afterwards he was transferred to AnQing Building Materials College. In 1951 He moved with the school from AnQing to Shanghai which became Shanghai Institute of Building Materials Engineering. In 1952 GuangCai dropped out of school to work for the Shanghai Construction Machinery Manufacturing Co. Ltd.. Working until to 1993 and retired with 41 years service. During his years, he worked with Machinists, trained apprentices, worked in management and support staff for other employees preparing to retire. Back in 1979, he was selected to go to work in Iraq, helping to rebuild the country for two years. In his spare time, he was dedicated to sports, was a team leader, a torch barer and basketball player for his company, He was an avid swimmer, played basketball and excelled in ping pong. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. In 1953, he found his life partner Yaping Bian at his work place and married in 1958. They were married in Shanghai and soon started their family. GuangCai was a dedicated family man, always gentle and kind, generous and supportive. He was beloved by his wife of 65 years, his children , Min (Danny), Rong (Thomas) and ChengWei (Ashley) and all the grand children; Julie (Mary), Jenny (Leo), Hellen (Terry), Alex and Willow.
Guang Cai immigrated to Canada in 2003 were he acclimated quickly to the Canadian way of life here in Toronto. In his first few years after arriving, Guangcai devoted himself to caring for a German child with health issues, bringing warmth and compassion to his life. During these years, he volunteered many times for community events, elections, and participated in many senior activities.
Guang Cai love to travel and has been to many places. He lived in Sichuan with his son's family for many years after retirement , travelled all over the province. His footprints can also be found on the Great Wall in Beijing, Lijiang in Yunnan, Zhangjiajie in Hunan, Lushan in Jiangxi, Fujian Tulou. He has also been to Singapore, Taiwan, Russia and more than five times to Cuba, Cruise to the Caribbeans many times with family and their senior group. He love to spend time at Cottage with family. Memorable events included celebrating their 50th Wedding anniversary in Shanghai. For their 60th Wedding Anniversary they celebrated on a 7 day cruise in Hawaii. Most recently, they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary here in Toronto with many friends and family.
