It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gonam Maharaj, beloved mother, wife, grandmother and friend to so many. Born in South Africa during the oppressive years of Apartheid, Gonam was raised in a family of modest means. Nevertheless, through determination, intelligence, and perseverance she went on to the University of Natal where she became the first woman in South Africa to hold a degree in psychology.

Like her husband, Haricharan (Hari) she fought fiercely against the oppression of a segregated nation. In the town of Dundee, Gonam and Hari would open their hearts and homes to family and strangers alike, helping out with a meal, a place to stay and even financial support. So many owe so much to this amazing couple.

Only when their lives were threatened by the government did they make the difficult decision to leave their homeland and begin a new life in Canada. Gonam embraced Canada and fell in love with its beauty, its opportunities and the kindness of its people. Together with Hari, they integrated into the community and created a wonderful, loving home that allowed their children to thrive under their guidance.

She was a legendary cook. Countless friends of her children—and often the neighbourhood itself—were welcomed around her table, where no one ever left hungry. A meal at the Maharaj home was more than delicious; it was an expression of Gonam's extraordinary generosity and love.

A funny, dedicated and well-read woman she was the bedrock of the Maharaj family. She is lovingly remembered by all of those who met her and by her three children Ashwin (husband to Neeta), Piriam (wife to Roland) and Avinash and her five grandchildren whom she cherished dearly: Deven, Laila, Anil, Anniq and Benjamin.

Our family would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Dawa Dolma, Tenzin Zomkey, and Deepthi, whose kindness, compassion, and exceptional care brought comfort to Gonam and our family during her final years.
She will be sorely missed by all.
