Gilbert K. H. Lung

Just before dawn on the stormy December 11, 2014, Gilbert Lung sadly lost his valiant battle with a massive stroke that had afflicted him since November 18, 2014 as a complication of a bladder infection. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Siu-Ling of 50 years. He was the loving and devoted father of William Kar-Way and Maria Wai-Mun. Gilbert will be affectionately remembered by his brothers, King-Kuen, King-Fai, King-Chuen, King-Cheong, and sisters, Fung-Yi and Fung-Ming. Gilbert will also be fondly missed by his long-time friends, Drs. Lai Po and Lai Choy Yan, and Mr. Louis Ng.

Gilbert grew up in Hong Kong in the midst of World War II, which interrupted his childhood and early education, but with his determination, he completed high school, and his spirit of learning and aspiration earned him a Certified Public Accountant Diploma by correspondence with the La Salle Extension University in Chicago, Illinois in 1963. In 1969, with the collective help and support of his relatives, siblings, and wife, Gilbert established his Sonway Manufacturers Limited that specialized in electronic products that were distributed overseas to Britain and the United States.

In 1981, at the peak of his business, Gilbert decided to move his family to Toronto, Canada, where he found better education and opportunities for his children, and a peaceful and democratic country to live in. Gilbert did try to re-establish his entrepreneurship in Toronto, but the economy at the time rendered his efforts in vain. In his later career in Canada, Gilbert worked in accounting administration for a Chinese dried food wholesaler for three years (1988-1991).

In 2005, Gilbert sustained a bleed in the head (subdural hematoma). His life was saved by the surgeon and nurses at Ottawa Civic Hospital and was rebuilt by the care at St. John’s Rehab,Toronto. He enjoyed nine good years of quality life thereafter, until his body was paralyzed by the latest massive stroke. Gilbert was blessed by the excellent and expert care of the physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapist (Rosanna), speech language pathologists (Debbie Georgiou & Heather), dietitian (Elizabeth), and social worker (Jennifer Lau) at the Scarborough Hospital, Birchmount Campus. Very special thanks to Dr. A. Bergman in emergency; Dr. David Rose in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU); Dr. Leong in 4D Medicine; Physiotherapist Cindy Lee; 4D Unit Secretary Velma who notified Gilbert's daughter at work on the day of the stroke; Nurse Laila, Krista, and Jasmine in CCU; Critical Care Response Team Nurse Mary Lemanski who counselled the family to follow Gilbert's wishes; Nurse Freeda Salanki, Leticia Toral, Janelle Lord, Sandra, Rina, and Pamela on 4D, all of whom gave Gilbert and the family the kindest and most compassionate care towards the end; and Marzieh who was his admitting nurse to 4D, but also the nurse who cared for him on the very last night of his life.

Special thanks to our neighbours, Mr. Kwong-Loi and Mrs. Jessie Yiu, and relatives, friends, and colleagues of the family for their support, kindness, and caring during the difficult times of Gilbert’s illness. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to attend the funeral service at York Visitation Centre at 160 Beecroft Road, North York, on Saturday Dec 20, 2014, visitation 10 – 11 am, Catholic ceremony 11 am – 12 pm. The interment will be held at York Cemetery at 101 Senlac Road at 12:15 pm. Relatives, friends, and colleagues are welcome to join the family for a reception luncheon at Dragon Dynasty Restaurant at 1:30 pm in Chartwell Shopping Centre, Unit 128, 2301 Brimley Road, Scarborough.

In memory of Gilbert and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Scarborough Hospital Foundation (directed to the Birchmount Campus) and/or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
