It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerda at Winchester Glen Assisted Living in Oshawa on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, just one week shy of her 94th birthday. Devoted wife of the late Hugo (2018), and cherished mother to Rob (Bonnie) and Kim. Loving and proud Oma to Matthew, Cooper, Andrew, Shawn, Trenton, and Arrow.
Born in Flensburg, Germany, Gerda moved to Canada in 1955 and soon after met and married Hugo in December 1956 and made Canada their permanent home. Gerda enjoyed working along Hugo in creating and building the family cottage on Kennebec Lake where they spent many summer holidays and weekends with family and friends. Gerda was able to enjoy visits to Kennebec Lake into her 93rd year.
Gerda was a skilled seamstress and knitter, as well as a master quilter. Rob and Kim have many of her creations on display throughout their homes. Gerda enjoyed many other hobbies through her years - gardening, reading, and playing cards, and was always up for a game of cards or Rummikub with the kids and grandkids. The family has many memories of evening card games at the cottage. In addition, Gerda had a sweet tooth, particularly for fine European chocolate, baked goods and ice cream.
Not afraid of technology, Gerda enjoyed playing card games/puzzles, watching you-tube videos, or checking out Facebook on her computer or iPad. She was also a faithful watcher of Judge Judy, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. Although not tech savvy, she knew that tech or tv support was readily available by one of the kids or grandkids.
Gerda felt fortunate to live and feel younger than her age, and knew she was blessed to enjoy good health well into her 90s. In her last years she was happy to live with family and to be an indulgent Oma to grand fur babies Jasper and Jinger who enjoyed an extra-special bond with her.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation and private family interment have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gerda can be made to the Humane Society of Durham Region or animal welfare charity of your choice.
Your presence we miss,
Your memory we treasure,
Loving you always,
Forgetting you never.
