Georgina Garner
September 23, 1928 - October 23, 2014
Georgina E. Garner (née Langley)
1928 - 2014
Georgina Garner passed away peacefully in Toronto on Thursday October 23rd in her residence at The Claremont at the age of 86. She is survived by her three siblings: loving sister Anna and brothers Bill and Joe. Her husband, Gordon, predeceased her in 1987 after 34 happy years together. She was the loving mother of Anne (John McLeod), Jim (Sally) and Marion (Dean Bernard) and proud grandmother to Kate, Jill, Kevin and Lily.
Georgina, affectionately called Bebe by close family, and her twin brother Bill were the first born to parents Joseph and Georgina Langley (née Baxter) on September 23, 1928. She attended Earl Grey Senior Public School and Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute but, like all of her siblings, had to end her formal schooling early to help support the family. In 1951, Georgina and Gordon met while both working at Ryerson Press. Following a short courtship, they were married on October 3, 1953. The young couple settled in Willowdale, which became the base of family life, as well as their successful family business, representing Canadian book publishers. In the early 1980’s they purchased a lakefront property in Muskoka where they built their beloved Lake of Bays cottage on Point Ideal.
Georgina was a warm, loving person. Everyone who came in contact with her was touched by her genuine interest in people and caring nature. She had a special connection to her extended family and had many friends in her local neighbourhoods of Willowdale and Muskoka, as well as at the Cricket Club, 4000 Yonge Street and, more recently, The Claremont.
The family would like to express their special thanks to the caring staff at The Claremont.
A celebration of Georgina’s life will be held for family and friends at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto (East Gate Entrance) on Tuesday October 28th at 11 00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Huntsville Hospital Foundation (www.huntsvillehospitalfoundation.ca).p
