George McLean passed away peacefully on March 16, 2016, at Sunnybrook Hospital, George Hees veteran wing, at the age of 92. Born May 16, 1923, in Brandon, Manitoba, his family moved to England in 1929. George was educated in the UK and joined the Royal Air Force during World War II. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1944 and returned to Canada at the end of the war.

George McLean will always be remembered for his distinctive voice – a voice that launched his accomplished broadcasting career. In 1946, he joined CJRL Radio in Kenora, in 1952, became news editor at CKRC in Winnipeg and in 1953, became chief announcer at CKOK in Penticton. In 1956, he joined CBC in Vancouver as a staff announcer for CBC Television. In 1965, George was transferred to Toronto and hosted national newscasts, including The National, a role he performed until 1986.

After retirement, George continued to enjoy golf, a sport he played religiously until after 90. He was well travelled, well read and well loved and respected by his family and his friends in Lagoon City, Ontario, where he and his wife Barbara lived for over 25 years. He continued to do voiceovers for radio and television commercials and his grandchildren were always so proud to hear them when they aired.

He is survived by wife Barbara, sister Mildred, children Sandi, Scott, Garth (Evelyn), Tracy, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by wife Marjorie, son Christopher, sister Edith, brother Ernie, and son-in-law Michael.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, located at Elgin Mills Visitation Centre, 1591 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill, Ontario, L4S 1M9. Donations in memory of George can be made to Sunnybrook Veterans Palliative Care or Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.

We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from George during his 92 years, among them: Real men don’t drive golf carts; scotch is the worthiest of all drinks; and a good life is achievable with drive, determination and a sense of humour – of course good looks and charisma help too.
