It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gene Edward Smallwood, but also with tremendous love and respect for his accomplishments of a life well lived. Gene was born in Montreal, Quebec, and lived his early years in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, following his father's Royal Canadian Air Force stations. The family settled in Toronto in 1943. There he attended the University of Toronto and met and married the love of his life, his wife Vera, in 1965. He and Vera moved to Brampton in 1968 to raise their children. They truly cherished the area and their life and remained happily there all his years.
Gene was awarded a scholarship to study Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto and was the recipient of the prestigious S.E. Wolfe Thesis award in 1976 by the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He was a practicing professional engineer, specializing in the planning, design, research and construction administration of roadway lighting, traffic signal systems, cathodic protection, airports, transit, road weather information systems and advanced traffic management systems. He joined McCormick Rankin, consulting engineers in Mississauga in 1962, becoming a partner in 1987 and a principal in 1992. He was also a Vice-President and Director of Integrated Maintenance and Operations Services Inc. (IMOS), a road maintenance firm, in November, 1999 and President and Chief Executive Officer of CANARWIS Inc., a road weather information firm, in December 1999. He retired on October 31, 2002 after 40 years to the day at McCormick Rankin.
Gene had many passions outside of work, including history and genealogy. One of Gene's hobbies was traveling through Canada, the US, and England to uncover details of his family tree. He spent his retirement writing a book with his findings, full of fascinating and entertaining stories of his ancestors and extended family.
