Dad lost his courageous battle with liposarcoma cancer on October 9, 2014. Survived by the love of his life and wife of 54 years Mary (nee Gregg), they were rarely apart. Survived by: eldest son Mark (Rachel) of Ajax, granddaughter Vivienne, great-granddaughter Harley-Jayce and soon-to-arrive granddaughter Caroline; youngest son Michael (Holly) and grandchildren Abigail and Aaron of Kamloops, BC; nieces Marlene Mills and Dianne Smith and nephew Jonathan Mills. He is also survived by close lifelong friends Charlie and Gail Jesshope, their daughter Barb (Blair) and son John (Andrea). Predeceased by his parents George (1979) and Ada (1989) and his sister Georgina (1975). Fred was born in East York, a first-generation Canadian to his parents who were immigrants from England and Ireland. He lived most of his life in Scarborough, but he and Mary often took family trips to Florida and British Columbia and in 2000 they took a very special Alaskan cruise together. From 1989-2008 he loved spending time at the family cottage on Horseshoe Lake in the Haliburton Highlands, where canoeing, fishing and hiking in the nature reserve were among some of his favourite activities. Often spending weeks at a time there, it was his home away from home. Fred devoted his time to family and through his generousity and guidance he was truly a remarkable son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Originally a tool and die maker after graduating from Danforth Technical School, he worked for General Electric. He then took a job with Signode Canada (now Illinois Tool Works), upgraded his skills through night school at the University of Toronto and received a Professional Manager designation in 1972. He remained an employee of Signode for 30 years until his retirement as General Manager in 1996. He volunteered with Toastmasters Canada, where he honed his public speaking skills and was past President of Toastmasters International Scarborough Club 3090. Many thanks to the oncology and surgery team at Princess Margaret Hospital who treated him in 2000 and through their treatment and care gave him 14 more years of living. Thanks to the nurses, professionals and staff at Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital and Providence Healthcare Palliative Unit A2 who cared for him in his final weeks and gave him the comfort and dignity he deserved. A memorial will be held at at PINE HILLS CEMETERY & VISITATION CENTRE, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough (north of St. Clair Ave. E., 416-267-8229), on Friday, October 17th at 10 a.m. All who knew him are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. www.etouch.ca
