Francis Leopold Barry, 100, of Port Credit, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31st 2013 at the McCall Centre for Continuing Care.

Francis (Frank) was born in London, England, on 16th of April, 1913. His early gift for drawing became a love affair with art that lasted throughout his life and set the direction for his future.

He joined the RAF in World War Two and it was while on a troopship to India, in 1944, that he met and fell in love with his future wife, Patricia, who was serving as a decoder with the FANYS. They were married in Simla, in northern India in 1945.

After the war he obtained diplomas in painting and education at the Hornsey School of Art and moved to the Isle of Wight to teach and start a family. Inspired by the beauty of the island, he painted both water colours and oil paintings, and his paintings were shown in a number of galleries, including the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibitions.

Frank always looked for new horizons and in 1963 he and his wife Patricia, and their two children (Ailsa and Christopher), immigrated to Canada. Frank taught art at Northmount High School in Montreal and obtained his M.F. A. from Concordia University, where he went on to teach for many years. During this time he was part of the thriving Quebec art scene and explored new forms, such as Op Art and Abstractionism. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and has works in many public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada.

After retiring from Concordia, Frank and Patricia moved to Mississauga where he immediately got involved in the rapidly growing Mississauga arts scene. He was active with a number of arts organisations and participated in many exhibitions and one man shows. He was a Member of the Ontario Society of Artists and also a lifelong member of both the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Colour and Form Society. He also served as a director of the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Mississauga Arts council.

Francis recently celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by his loving family and friends. Francis is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years Patricia and his children, Ailsa and Christopher and son-in-law Jonathan and daughter-in-law Patricia. He is also survived by his three loving granddaughters Alexandra, Augusta and Sidonie. He will be fondly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
We would like to thank the care givers at McCall Centre who made him so comfortable in his last days and Peel Senior Link staff for their support over the last few years.

Funeral services will be held on 11:30, Friday, August 9th, 2013 at the Simple Alternative, 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga L4W 5J1 and the family will greet friends from 10:30 on. There will be a reception from 12:30-2pm following the service. Please don’t send flowers but contribute to an arts organisation of your choice. Beloved mother of Christopher (Patricia) and Ailsa (Jonathan). Proud grandmother of Alexandra, Augusta and Sidonie. Loving sister-in-law of Sheila Rawlinson and loved by many nieces and nephews.

Born in London, UK, Patricia served with the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (F.A.N.Y) during the Second World War. She was part of a highly secret section of the FANYs which worked for the Special Operations Executive. Her unit worked on decoding messages in the French Section, and also with Leo Marks and "the Baker Street Irregulars", decoding 'indecipherables' at 64 Baker Street. Later in the war she sailed to India to join Force 136 at SOE stations in Delhi and Ceylon, where it had been set up to be closer to the headquarters of the Allied South East Asia Command.

While sailing to India on the convoy she met Frank Barry, a young Intelligence officer in the British Air Force, and after a whirlwind romance they married in India, in 1945. After the war, they moved to the Isle of Wight and Pat worked part-time with the Admiralty at Osborne House, while raising two children. In 1963, ready for a new adventure, the family sailed to Montreal. After arriving in Canada, Patricia worked at Lower Canada College in Montreal as secretary to the Headmaster, where her amazing organizational skills ensured the smooth operation of the school for many years. She retired to Port Credit, Mississauga, where she continued to have a busy social life, and spent many happy years volunteering and pursuing her hobbies of gardening and cooking.

Special thanks to Community Care Access, and the many doctors, nurses, professional and support staff at the Trillium Hospital who cared for and supported Patricia. The family extends particular gratitude to Peel Senior Link for their unwavering care, compassion and dedication to Patricia throughout her last few years. A very special debt of gratitude to Gemma Faustino and Mary Jane Orjeda, who cared for Patricia continually during the last three years.

Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Meadowvale Cemetery and Crematorium - CHAPEL, 7732 Mavis Road, Brampton, ON L6Y 5L5.

In lieu of flowers a tax deductable donation may be made to Peel Senior Link, at https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/11311 or Seniors’ Life Enhancement Centres.
