Evanthia, the youngest of seven siblings, was born in Alexandretta, Syria, to parents of Cypriot descent, Aggela and Panayiotis Hatzigeorgiou. The family operated a successful bakery until 1939, when political unrest forced them to seek a new life in Greece, a journey filled with hope.
Evanthia’s life truly began to blossom in 1962 while working at a shoe factory in Athens, Greece, where she met the love of her life, Nick. Their romance grew quickly, and when Nick decided to pursue a more prosperous future by immigrating to Toronto in 1965, Evanthia made the immediate decision to follow him, determined to begin their new life together.
Evanthia and Nick married at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in 1966. Their new home became a hub for the growing Greek community, creating a vibrant social network filled with late-night parties, laughter and memories reminiscent of Greece. Driven and tireless, they worked in the restaurant and commercial cleaning industries, allowing them to purchase their first home in Greektown on the Danforth. Evanthia soon embraced her most cherished role: a mother to Maria (Chris) and Aristomenis (Deana). Her dedication to raising her children was the most significant part of her life. One of her greatest joys was the birth of her grandson, Aristotle (Ari). She loved to laugh with him and playfully make fun of Pappou Niko.
Despite facing numerous health challenges, Evanthia's faith, strength, resilience and determination were unwavering, allowing her to overcome many obstacles and live a life defined by love and commitment.
