Evan Hugh Reynolds

Evan Hugh Reynolds passed away peacefully at his home in Kissimmee, Florida, on June 14, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born on May 5, 1935, in the rural community of Glengoffe, St. Catherine, Jamaica, Evan was the youngest child of Hubert Reynolds and the only son of Ashelina Harris Reynolds. His mother rejoiced in the birth of her only son after five daughters, a family story that became one of his favourites to tell. Surrounded by the affection of his sisters, he grew up with the confidence of a young prince—a fitting beginning for the nickname that would follow him throughout life, “The Black Prince.”
The loss of his mother at thirteen marked the end of an idyllic childhood, but it also revealed the resilience and inner strength that would define the man he became.
Exceptionally bright and endlessly curious, Evan was a gifted student whose dream was to become a lawyer. Instead, he found his calling in policing. He served with distinction for more than forty years in both the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Metropolitan Toronto Police, rising to the rank of Sergeant in each. Known for his exceptional motorcycle skills, he escorted visiting dignitaries—including Queen Elizabeth II—and earned the respect of colleagues for his leadership and the encouragement he gave to younger officers.
In 1959, Evan married Annette Stephenson. Their union lasted until 1966 when they peacefully parted.
1968, Evan married Doreth Thompson, beginning a partnership that spanned fifty-one years. Together they built a life in Canada rooted in family, faith, hard work, and generosity. Their home in Scarborough was a beloved gathering place where dominoes were played, politics were debated, and no one left hungry. He coaxed remarkable harvests from his vegetable garden, grew roses with pride, and welcomed relatives, neighbours, and newcomers with equal generosity. Many relatives found their footing in Canada because Evan quietly opened doors, offered guidance, and believed success was meant to be shared.
Evan was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doreth; his son, Horatio; and his grandson, Vincent.
He is survived by his children: Yvonne Reynolds; Evon Hugh St. George Reynolds (“Junior”); Cherryl Reynolds; Hugh Garfield Reynolds (Ayanna); and Evon Pierre De Bergerac Reynolds (Christina); his stepdaughter, Paulette Fleary; and his cherished sister, Pearl Reynolds.
He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Christopher, Brandon, Kayson, Jade, Jola, James, Joshua, Ajani, Evony, Xaverie, Rowan, and Rhece; and by generations of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends across Jamaica, Canada, England, and the United States.
More than anything, those who knew Evan will remember the man behind the accomplishments. He had a presence that filled every room he entered. He valued education, discipline, and independent thought, expecting the same from those he loved. His faith as a devoted Seventh-day Adventist quietly guided his life. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, unmistakable laugh, generosity, and unwavering belief that knowledge was life's greatest gift. His influence lives on in the family he loved and the many lives he touched. He truly did it his way
