ETHEL MARGARET HUNTER

July 13, 1921 - November 15, 2013

It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Ethel (Blackie) on November 15, 2013 in Toronto. Predeceased by her husband Bill, she leaves behind her daughters Sue (Gord Ferguson), Sandy (Phil Pyatt), Nancy (Steve Gross), Lynne (Bede Mackay) and son Robert (Stephanie). Fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Ian, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Campbell, Evan, Liam, John and Virginia. She also leaves behind her three brothers, Roy, Harry and Doug Blackwell.

Blackie’s childhood and experiences during the Depression would influence a large part of her life. She left school at any early age to help support her family during tough times. As a result, education for her children was of utmost importance. Indeed her greatest pleasure was spending time with her five children. For them, there was no task too great or effort too large. She had a big heart, quiet strength and a positive attitude.

On retirement, Blackie would enjoy time with her many relatives in her favourite place, Ft. Myer’s Beach. It was there she enjoyed walking the beach, playing countless bridge and euchre games and playing golf.

The family is forever grateful to the wonderful caregivers at The Claremont Retirement Home, Cedarhurst, and Meighan Manor, who cared for Blackie with much love over the years – keeping her happy and entertained (although we know she did her share of entertaining for them!). We’re sure they all enjoyed her frankness and the wonderful sense of style that never left her.

Special thanks to the Palliative care team at Sunnybrook Hospital and nursing station C6, for their incredible care and kindness at the end, and to Dr. Monavarri, her family physician, who went above and beyond on several occasions for us.

Funeral service Friday November 22 at 1pm at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre. A light reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
