Ernie Enola
October 29, 1923 - December 17, 2015
The world is a less funny place now that Ernie is gone. Right up to the end on Dec 17 he made us smile, chuckle and downright belly laugh.
Ernie had a string of achievements but when asked what he did he would simply say, “I was a teacher.” He never mentioned being a Principal for most of his career or a Governor of the Board of The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education or President of his Principals’ Association or President of his Curling Club or Honourary Life Member of his teachers’ association or any other achievement of merit.
Ernie was passionately curious, especially about astronomy. He loved to travel and when he could no longer do so, he insisted that I continue and said he would travel vicariously. The accompanying photo is from his favourite trip to the Masai Mara in East Africa.
Ernie had one addiction: soccer. Even in his last days, he managed to stay awake for the full MLS final. He loved jazz, especially big band music. He adored animals, especially dogs. When we lived on Towne Blvd, he was honourary grandfather to all four legged creatures.
Ernie loved gardening and had flower gardens everywhere. He especially loved the kitchen garden he established at our home near Schomberg.
As a rational atheist, Ernie requested that he be cremated and that a secular celebration of Life, not just his life, be held. Wear something bright!
ERNIE
My life
shredded and strewn
wept behind walls
frantically erected
after the divorce
ugly and painful befitting my marriage
You
dismantled my enclosure
brick by brick
thought by thought
touch by touch
I was whole again
and we were greater than the sum
We scaled mountains
jagged and bleak
sheltering
under sheets of solid honest blue
and dazzling night rainbows
with suns and moons of forever
before us
Death
expected unwelcome ungracious
erases all preparations
Now
like a Moore sculpture
formidable, unyielding
I move through time
a massive forever emptiness
at my core
Elka Enola
