Enid Madeleine Blacket
July 10, 1920 - August 18, 2013
BLACKET, Enid Madeleine (nee Welcomme) - Enid passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Sunnybrook Hospital on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the age of 93 following a brief illness that started only on Friday, August 16th. She was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Blacket who died at age 70 in 1990 in England. Enid was the much loved mother of Linda Wright and husband Doug Wright; loving "Grandy" to Angela and the late Anthony who passed away at the age of 21 in 2002. She was sadly predeceased only 4 days earlier by her brother, Raymond (Jim) Welcomme of Norfolk, England; she was a dear sister to Robin Welcomme of Suffolk, England and Irene Jarvis of Coventry, England. She was the daughter of the late Raymond Welcomme and Lillian (nee Green). Enid was half French as her father was born in France. Her mother was from England. As a child, Enid lived in France for a couple of years in the Dordogne region. Enid met Stan during the war when they both worked at Grovelands Hospital in Southgate, London where she was a Red Cross nurse and he was an ambulance driver . She didn't see Stan for five years when he was posted to India. Ironically, Stan did not see much war action in India while Enid survived a bomb attack of the Standard Telephone factory where she was working in North London. She also told of being "chased" by a doodlebug across Grovelands Park. She always maintained she saw far more action than Stan. When he returned from India they got engaged and married in 1946. Enid worked as a receptionist in the casualty (emergency) department of Highlands Hospital in London for many years until her retirement. Her daughter, Linda, emigrated to Canada in 1970 and married Doug, a Canadian, in 1973. Enid bravely emigrated to Canada from Southgate in North London, England in 2000 at the age of 80 to join her daughter, Linda and family. She was a huge support to the family with her cherished grandson, Anthony, who had many special needs and was there for them when he passed away. She loved to visit Anthony at the Safehaven group home where he lived near the family for 11 years. Anthony and Safehaven were very dear to her heart. She will be missed by family, friends and neighbours here in Ontario, Canada as well as in the UK and Australia. We'd like to give our special thanks to the paramedics and emergency room staff at Sunnybrook who were so kind and supportive throughout Enid's time at the hospital. Enid has been cremated privately. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Transfiguration, 111 Manor Road East, Toronto at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 14th. Donations in Enid's name may be made to the Safehaven Project for Community Living, 1173 Bloor Street West, Toronto, M6H 1M9 (www.safehaven.to) or to the Sunnybrook Foundation at 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, M4N 3M5 (www.donate.sunnybrook.ca).
