Emily Shiang Ping Wong (黃王湘萍) was born in Shanghai in November 1927, the youngest of 11 siblings. She had a happy childhood, much loved by her family. After the war, she attended Hujiang University (滬江大學) majoring in English. Soon after moving to Hong Kong in 1949, she met John Wong. He proposed after their third date and the couple married in December 1950. John worked at Hong Kong Kodak and ran an accounting business. Soon came four children- Amy, Grace, David and Samuel. Emily took care of household activities, kids schooling, piano lessons, a dog, 2 cats, while overseeing the accounting office. Remarkably, she also learned to drive, took opera lessons, and sewed dresses for Amy and Grace.
Mom and Dad made a bold move to Toronto in 1971. We settled in Scarborough learning to garden in the summer and survived big snow storms. Mom became a real estate agent, and self-taught to finish the basement. In 1976, Dad suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage. By God’s grace, he survived. Mom became his care-giver and managed the household finances. Amy graduated in music, Grace MBA, while David became an anesthesiologist and Sam pursued a dual career in music and medicine. In 1991, Dad went to the presence of the Lord. Mom continued a very active life- singing in church choir, attending church fellowship, helping raise grand-children, and traveling the world. At Yee Hong Garden Terrace (頤翠園), she often led singing and was loved by her community. Her happiest moments were the family Caribbean boat cruises- land excursions, family dinners, shows, and playing mahjong.
In her later years, despite physical pain and difficulties with mobility, her faith remained strong and she continued to share about Jesus. A few days before her passing, she said she’s ready to see the Lord where there will be no more pain and tears. On April 10, 2023, Easter Monday, she passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her family. It's a sad time but also a time to rejoice. She will be fondly remembered for her generosity, kindness, encouragement, love, beautiful voice, and faith in God.
