Obituary
In Loving Memory of Ellen Bothwell
March 21, 1933 - February 14, 2026
Ellen Bothwell entered the presence of her Lord and Saviour on February 14, 2026, at the age of 92. She is predeceased by her husband of 72 years, James Bothwell, who passed into eternity on December 17, 2025. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Elizabeth (John), Linda (Ray), Steve (Tracy), her grandchildren, Michael (Michelle), Bryan (Taylor), David (Katie), Stephen (Hailey), James (Amanda), Jenny (Cooper), Andrew (Taylor), and her great-grandchildren, Ashleigh, Ava, Zoey, Mason, Amelia, Oliver, William, Lewis, Daphne, Jonas, Nora and Claire. She is also sadly missed by many other family members and friends, both in Canada, The United States and overseas.
Ellen was born on March 21, 1933, at City Hospital, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her parents were Annie and William Wilson. She was the eldest of five children including Anne (predeceased), William John who lived seven months, Doreen and Harry. She was christened at St. Anne’s Cathedral and lived at 6 Ellen’s Court. As a young girl, Ellen enjoyed tap dancing lessons, and was a member of The Girl Guides. She attended Edenderry School.
Ellen finished school at age fourteen and immediately began work at Ewart’s Factory, which made linen tablecloths. Her first job was to put bobbins on the machines. She worked there until age sixteen, moving up to better positions. At age seventeen, Ellen went to North Berrick, Scotland with a friend, to work in a hotel.
On December 16, 1953, when Ellen was twenty years old, she and Jim were married at St. Mary’s Church of Ireland. They emigrated to Toronto with their first two children, Elizabeth and Linda, on June 27, 1957.
Because employment was scarce, Ellen and Jim returned to Belfast in December 1959. They bought a house on Westway Parade and through the witness of their neighbours, Wesley and Ann Robinson, and other faithful friends, Ellen accepted Jesus as her Saviour. Ellen and Jim became members of The Welcome Hall. Their family grew as they welcomed a son, James Stephen, into their family.
On March 15, 1972, Ellen and Jim emigrated once more to Canada, living in Etobicoke, Mississauga and Brampton. They attended Richview Baptist Church. Along with Jim, Ellen served faithfully in The 50 Plus Group, Joy Fellowship and for twelve years in the preparation of Communion. She was employed at The Bay, Terry Tan Nursery and Living Lighting.
Ellen and Jim bought a cottage on Star Lake on September 1, 1987 where Ellen enjoyed spending time, surrounded by her family. She loved going to garage sales and visiting the local Flea Market. Shopping in Parry Sound and Huntsville gave her great pleasure, as did enjoying a cup of tea and a treat at the Rosseau Bakery. Fall was a special time when the family gathered for Thanksgiving Dinner. She accompanied the family on long walks around the Lake.
Ellen looked forward to yearly trips to Myrtle Beach where life long friends were made. Trips to California, Forida and Northern Ireland were thoroughly enjoyed as they reconnected with family and friends.
Ellen was a woman of a quiet, strong faith, spending time reading the Scriptures and in prayer. She and Jim enjoyed their many years of getting together with their Bible Group for study and a great social time.
Ellen loved her family dearly, hosting family dinners for many years. She could be counted on to help with her grandchildren. She volunteered in the classroom at Brampton Christian School for over twenty years and was much loved by the students.
Ellen spent her last years with Jim at Holland Christian Homes, passing away peacefully after a short stay at Burton Manor.
