Elizabeth Hummel
November 26, 1959 - August 1, 2015
Elizabeth passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, August 1, 2015, in Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto. She was 55, and her death is believed to be due to a blood clot moving from her leg, and lodging in a vital organ.
Jean Elizabeth Hummel was born November 26, 1959. Daughter of Richard Hummel and Mary Ann (nee Tygart) Hummel, and sister of John Hummel.
She attended Brown Public School, The International School of Prague, Deer Park Senior School, Oakwood Collegiate Institute, Victoria College at the University of Toronto and Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. Elizabeth graduated from Ryerson in May 1987, with a four year Diploma in Laboratory Science, ranking 9th in her class of 134.
Elizabeth loved music, playing the bassoon and other instruments. She played with the National Youth Band of Canada, The Oakwood Symphony Orchestra and the Hart House Orchestra. Many will remember fondly the classical, folk and celtic music that she loved to listen to.
Pets were always critical to Elizabeth’s life. She had dogs, cats, guppies, goldfish, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, and probably some others. Dogs became the focus with her first Golden Retriever, Keefer. She spent tremendous time training Keefer, and competing him in Obedience, Agility and Flyball. Keefer was joined by Daron, and over the years they were succeeded by Kyler and Finbar. As time passed, Elizabeth no longer competed her dogs, but she still trained them intensively, and spent many of her happiest times playing with the loves of her life.
Elizabeth was a very loving and caring person. She mentored many of the younger people in her life. Later, she nursed her mother until she passed away in 2010, and was caring for her father until her own passing.
Animals were always central in her life, and eventually Elizabeth returned to school, Seneca College and York University, graduating, with honours, in Veterinary Technology in June 2012, GPA 3.9. “Advanced Wildlife Technician” and “Wildlife Technician Field Studies” were completed at Seneca College in summer 2012, and she passed the VTNE in August 2012. She subsequently joined the OSPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic in Newmarket, where she was passionate about her work.
Elizabeth also enjoyed woodworking, often with her brother John, and at the Canadian Marquetry Society and the Franklin Horner Community Centre Woodshop.
Elizabeth will be sadly missed by all who knew her. In memory of her, donations to “The Farley Foundation” ( http://www.farleyfoundation.org/ ) would be welcome.
