Cushing, Elizabeth G. (Betty) 1920-2013

Betty died on January 8 at age 92, comforted by the love of her family and by the belief that she would be reunited with her beloved Len, husband of 49 years. She will be much missed by son Michael (Cheryl), daughter Adele (Marden) and grandson Richie.

Born Elizabeth Donnelly in Toronto, Betty had six sisters and one brother, all of whom have predeceased her. Her brother’s widow Audrey Donnelly has remained a loyal friend.

Betty and Len married in 1942 and following his overseas military service, they moved to Deep River in the Ottawa Valley. Betty managed to balance the role of homemaker and mom with a successful career in office management and bookkeeping. She later documented her 27 years in Deep River in a book for friends and family.

As a younger woman Betty loved sports (skiing, golf, curling). She always made friends easily and loved to laugh, especially if the joke came from Len. She was attractive and stylish, feisty and strong-willed.

She and Len returned to Toronto in 1978, where he died in 1991.She lived her last years in the Houses of Providence in Scarborough, where she received excellent care and made new friends. Although her memory was failing, she knew what she wanted – to the end.

At her direction, cremation will occur and her ashes, together with Len’s, will be interred in Deep River.

Remembrances of Betty and messages for her family can be posted at www.etouch.ca. Should you wish to make a donation in her name, please consider the Providence Healthcare Foundation.
