Eleftheria Spiros (née Massis) June 26, 2026.

It is with great sadness and sorrow that our family announces the passing of our dear beloved Eleftheria “Victoria” in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Chris Spiros, cherished mother to Steve, Anthony and Sally (Spero) and very proud grandmother & Yiayia to Leah (René), Chloe (Ryan) and loving great grandmother to Lucas, Cole, Sage and Parker.

Eleftheria was born in Asprogia, Greece. Middle daughter to the late George and Sofia Massis, sister to the late Vasiliki “Elsie” Siscopulos (the late Dimitri), the late Lazaros "Lazo" (Olga), the late Nick & Aleka, Annie Rassos (the late Angelo Rassos) Louis and many nieces and nephews.

We will miss her dearly and Eleftheria will remain forever in our hearts. May her memory be eternal.

Our dearly departed Eleftheria was born in Asprogia , Greece

In 1933. She was the middle daughter of Sofia and George Massis.

She enjoyed the security of her childhood in her early years with her

family but soon began to experience a life of uncertainty.

As a young girl she was uprooted through no choice of her own

and was separated from her siblings and family to live in the city of

Thessaloniki with her Thea Artemis, a schoolteacher, and her Theo

Andoni, who was a retired Sargent in the Greek army. This was a

blessing as it saved her life when she was stricken with appendicitis

which she would not have survived if she had been with her family in

a small village with no hospital. Unfortunately, it was war time which

prevented her from seeing her parents, siblings and extended

family which she dearly missed.

In her late teens, once again through no choice of her own,

fate again had uprooted her to travel by boat for two weeks to a

foreign country called Canada where they spoke a foreign language.

One cannot imagine how lonely, afraid, and traumatizing this

must have been for a young girl. Eleftheria arrived in Canada and

was welcomed in Kitchener to be a caregiver for Baba Domnika

who she spoke about very often. Soon after, she was moved to

Toronto to live with her Teta Alexandra and Theo Pantelis and began

to work at various jobs with her Teta.

Soon after there was a handsome young man by the name

of Chris Spiros who saw a picture of her and requested to meet her.

They soon married and she began her life in Toronto.

Eleftheria became a mother to 3 children: Steve, Anthony &

Sally and raised them in their family home on Dorval Rd. Times were

not easy while Chris worked many jobs, but she was very

determined & resilient to make ends meet accepting any job

opportunities to help provide for her family. She worked at Planters

Peanuts, Primrose Donuts, Diamond Knitting Mills, Sewing and

Jewelry factories to name just a few.

Eleftheria was paving a path for her parents and siblings

to follow in her footsteps to Canada. She was a brave courageous

trailblazer. Family, friends and relatives were all welcomed to live

in her home on Dorval Rd. with open arms and an opportunity to

begin a new life in Canada to create their own destiny. She did the

best she could to help others arriving in Canada.

Sadly in 1988 she lost her loving husband Chris soon after he

held his newly born twin granddaughters for the first and last time,

but sadly he never saw the joy of watching them grow.

Eleftheria began her retirement years as a young widow and

blessed with twin granddaughters she visited almost every day.

Eleftheria loved to sing Greek songs like an opera singer. She

loved birds and songbirds, she was very independent and loved her

home which she never stopped talking about till the end.

She loved to garden and always shared cuttings of her hisbiscus

trees with her neighbours, friends and relatives. She kept busy with

her best friend Eleni having morning coffee, going to Baskin Robbins

for ice cream, enjoying walks in her neighbourhood, going to church,

visiting her late husband at the cemetery and volunteering at the

Hellenic Greek home and enjoyed their day trips to the Casino.

She was sympathetic to those who were ill or needed assistance.

Eleftheria’s memory should be remembered for her sacrifices,

her courage, her resilience and her strength.

Let’s remember Eleftheria as a daughter, a sister, a mother,

a proud grandmother to her twin granddaughters Leah and

Chloe and her precious four great grandchildren Lucas, Cole, Sage

and Parker who she absolutely adored.

Sadly, she is no longer by our side, but she lives on in the

hearts of her family and friends, in the stories we tell and the lives

that she touched.

“To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die”.

We have great comfort and peace knowing that she was never

left alone right up until the end and will never be alone in her

afterlife since she has joined her beloved Chris, her parents and

predeceased family members she spoke of often.

We thank her for all of her sacrifices and may her memory not

be remembered with sadness, but with gratitude for everything she

gave, for everything she endured, may her memory rest in peace

and may her memory be Eternal. God Bless her soul.

Eleftheria’s family will be forever grateful and thank all of you who

came to share in their grief and to pay their last respects.
