Edward James Handrigan
November 2, 1934 - February 2, 2015
Brampton, Ontario – Edward James Handrigan, at the age of 80, died peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2015 at his home after a lengthy struggle with prostate cancer.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Trudy Handrigan (Gertrude van Wageningen). Edward’s focus was always on his family and he leaves behind his 3 children and 6 grandchildren. His son, Brian has 2 children: Sara and William. His daughter, Patricia Wen has 2 children: Sean Wen and Stephen Wen. His son, Norman and Norman’s wife, Lorraine Thompson, have 2 children: Theresa and Howard. He will also be fondly remembered by his 3 adopted grandchildren: Liam, Daniel, and Declan Gasidlo who are children of Trudy Handrigan’s cousin: Rob Gasidlo. Edward is survived by his older sister, Helen Hagan and her husband Norm Hagan, and Trudy's younger brother, Albert and his wife, Carole. He is fondly remembered by their families. Pre-deceased by his parent: William John Handrigan (Bill), and Sarah Matilda Meany (Sadie).
Many extended family members have cherished memories of this soft-spoken man including those in Ottawa, Newfoundland, Montreal, the United States, and the Netherlands. Dear friends developed in the places that Edward Handrigan lived: Montreal, Sarnia and Brampton.
The family is very grateful for the support provided to them through Ed's lengthy illness. We apologize for not naming everyone – but, do want to acknowledge a few people who touched our lives. Thank you to Dr. Juhi Husain for treating his cancer with compassion and determination; to Dr. Ibrahim for his help with the urology issues; Dr. Moody for his support in so many ways throughout the years, to the nurses and staff at Holland Christian Home for always being there with a smile and helping hand; to the Ontario Government, the CCAC, and Spectrum Health Care for allowing Edward the option of dying at home peacefully among family. In this team there were a few amazing people we just need to thank from the bottom of our hearts: Nurse Nancy Pringle, PSW workers: Marion and Judith; and CCAC coordinator: LeeAnn Lush.
Edward Handrigan will be cremated at Meadowvale Cemetery. We will be having a visitation and funeral service there following the cremation on Saturday, February 7, 2015.
