Margaret “Peggy” Duthie, née Bradbury, died peacefully on May 8, 2026, at The Beechwood in Mississauga, Ontario, three weeks after her 102nd birthday.
Peggy was born in Stockport, Cheshire, England, the younger daughter of Ernest Bradbury, an engineer, and Alice Bradbury, née Clafton. She grew up in Cheshire, first as a Brownie and later a Girl Guide, and studied Domestic Science. Her first position took her to Loughborough, but in her twenties she returned home to nurse her father through his final illness, caring for him at home until his death. She later returned to Loughborough, where she managed the cafeteria at Loughborough College. There, in the early 1950s, she met a young man named James Hunter Duthie. They married in 1954.
In 1956, Peggy and Jimmy emigrated to Hong Kong, where Jimmy joined the faculty of the University of Hong Kong. They lived for many years at 6 Felix Villas on Mount Davis Road, with their beloved amah Ah Fong, whom the children loved as a second mother. During those years, three more children were born. After a decade in Hong Kong, the family moved to Urbana, Illinois, where Jimmy earned his master's and doctoral degrees. In 1969 they settled in Ontario, where Jimmy joined the faculty of the University of Windsor. They made their home in Essex, Ontario, for many years — joined, for much of that time, by their black Labrador, Cholmondeley, Peggy's quiet daily companion. In retirement, Peggy and Jimmy divided their time between Brechin, Ontario, and Fort McCoy, Florida.
Peggy was a magnificent cook — equally at home with English roast beef, Scotch eggs, and the Cantonese cuisine she had mastered in Hong Kong. She and Jimmy were celebrated for the elaborate dinner parties they hosted for friends. She taught her children to cook, then her grandchildren, with such patience and good humor that the lessons stayed with them. The love of good food she planted in her family endures. She was also a gardener, a reader, a needleworker, a wonderful correspondent, a quiet volunteer. She delivered Meals on Wheels. For decades she ran a women's group. For some years she taught cooking classes for adults in Essex, helping people learn to make inexpensive, nutritious meals.
Peggy was kind, warm, patient, fiercely loyal, unfailingly generous. She was proud of her English heritage, proud, in time, to have become a Canadian. She bore the slow losses of her final years stoically. She rarely complained. She was grateful for her life. It was, she would tell you, a good life.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband Jimmy in 2017, by her parents, by her sister Joan Orrill, by her nephews Roger and Andrew Orrill. She is survived by her four children: Sheona (Pat) of Nelson, British Columbia; Jamie (Anne) of Dallas, Texas; Lesley (Kent); Ross, along with Daphne, who remains dear to the family. She is also survived by her grandchildren Graham, Alison, Colin, Ian, Alex, Marina, and by her great-grandchildren Ava and Alasdair.
The family is profoundly grateful to Barbara Manners, Peggy’s dear friend and companion in her final years, whose kindness and devotion cannot easily be repaid, and to the staff of The Beechwood.
A memorial service will be held at The Simple Alternative, 1535 S Gateway Road, Mississauga, on June 6 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The War Amps or the Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation.
