Donald Ross Muir
August 28, 1931 - May 4, 2016
Donald Ross Muir born August 28, 1931 passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016, surrounded by family, at the William Osler Health Sciences Centre in Brampton, Ontario.
Dad was the first of two children born to Charles Muir and Grace Ronald in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Dad left school at 16 to work on cars, a lifelong passion. He married Ruby Mary Allen in August 1953. He completed his high school matriculation after marriage and translated his skills as an automobile mechanic into work as an aircraft mechanic. The long term goal was to fly commercial aircraft and Dad became a flight engineer on Lockheed Super Constellations with Trans Canada Airlines in 1957, flying out of Vancouver.
His progress to a career as a commercial pilot was ended by polio in 1960. With three children to support (the other two came later), Dad resumed his career in aviation as a flight dispatcher first in Winnipeg, then Montreal and Toronto, ending his career with Air Canada in 1989 when he took early retirement.
In retirement Dad returned to his roots and ran a little business supplying brakes to auto shops in the GTA. Dad continued to enjoy life to the end, although the long terms effects of polio reduced his mobility in the last few years.
Dad will be remembered as a warm and generous soul, who lived his life to the fullest but wisely and well. He loved people and they loved him. He was devoted to his family, friends and spiritual community, and he touched the lives of many, many others. He lived life with purpose, integrity and curiosity. His acts of generosity, large and small, will be remembered by many. He read widely, questioned everything and everyone, and was always up for a debate. His faith was deep, authentic and inclusive. His absence from us will be deeply felt.
Dad is survived by Ruby, his life-long partner, his five children, David (Karen), Sherry, Patti (Jack), Donna (Peter) and Bill (Heather), 12 grandchildren, seven great grandkids with one more on the way, and sister Doreen Loewen (Henry, deceased).
