Daphne Evelyn Wood
August 12, 1927 - February 7, 2016
Daphne Evelyn Wood (born Mathews) died surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, in Grimsby, Ont.
Always an adventurer, Daphne left her English village of Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk shortly after the Second World War and sailed to a new country on the RMS Mauretania. She had a return ticket just in case.
Daphne came to Canada to be with the love of her life, Tom Wood, whom she married in 1947. She died wearing his wedding band alongside hers.
The Woods built a house in Mount Dennis and raised two daughters, Lesley and Denise. They spent many joy-filled summer weekends at the cottage on Eagle Lake, near South River, Ont.
Daphne had no trouble making friends, but there was always a special place for Noreen, who was the first person to talk to her when she went to work at Continental Can.
Daphne was a loving grandmother to Dana, Kate, Josh, Lynn, Sarah and Tim. She was also overjoyed to welcome seven great great-grand-children over the final few years of her life: Lincoln, Griffin, Owen, Hannah, Beatrice, Cole and Elliott.
In her spare time, Daphne liked to keep in touch with her relatives in England, play bingo or cards, watch the Y&R and knit sweaters for her great-grand-children and hats for newborns.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Feb. 12.
In lieu of flowers, her daughters have asked for donations to support a charity of your choice.
