It is great sadness that we announce the passing of our family matriarch, Chuy Hee Kam (nee Cho) on the morning of July 5, 2014.

Born on November 4, 1932 in Sa Luk Mee village, Guangzhou, China, she was the youngest of seven children. Having lost her parents at an early age, Chuy Hee was raised by her siblings and her paternal grandmother. Her childhood and teen years were spent taking care of her nieces and nephews and doing farmwork. She spoke often of planting rice in paddy fields, growing fresh vegetables and managing the oxen.

At age seventeen Chuy Hee married Park Hung Kam of neighbouring Gung Mee village. Their oldest son, Chuck Ken was born in 1955. Her husband Park Hung emigrated to Georgetown, Guyana in 1956 to seek better economic opportunities. Along with paternal grandmother, Chook Moi Kong, she raised Chuck and her brother-in-law, Pak Tim until they emigrated in 1964, leaving from Macau.

In Georgetown, Chuy Hee and Park Hung welcomed three more children, Shirley, Philip and Elizabeth. She worked alongside Park Hung running the family store. In 1972, the family emigrated to Toronto, Canada and were long-time residents of the Roncesvalles neighbourhood. Chuy Hee worked as a seamstress until her retirement.

With a strong will, independent mind and ever resourcefulness, Chuy Hee always worked hard planting a big backyard garden, cooking elaborate family meals or sewing late into the evening. While her children recall her strict ways, her grandchildren have fond memories of her preparing their favourite foods and bundling them into home-made quilted clothing.

Predeceased by her siblings in China and Malaysia, she is survived by her husband Park Hung and children: Chuck Ken (Su), Shirley (Hengen), Philip (Valerie) and Elizabeth. She was the proud grandmother of ten: Diana, Michael, Matthew, Nicholas, Haley, Katherine, Alex, Andrew, Mitchell and Brandon.

Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Yee Hong Scarborough Finch nursing home for taking care of Mom in these last two years. Special mention to Ann Lo Chan, May and Jasmine for their care and kindness.
