It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Choy Tenn on November 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer.
Choy was born in China and, at the age of four, traveled with his mother to Malaysia in search of safety and a better life. Tragically, his mother passed away when he was eight years old, leaving him to navigate life on his own. From that time until he was 28, Choy demonstrated extraordinary resilience, strength, and independence, building the foundation for the remarkable life he would lead.
At 28, Choy traveled to Guyana to reunite with his father. About six months later, he moved to Jamaica, where his older brother, Floyd, helped him establish his first business. It was shortly thereafter, in 1965, that Choy married his beloved wife, Ivy, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion.
Choy was a self-made man. In Jamaica, he opened a General Store in Lionel Town and a Patty Shop in Old Harbour. In 1977, he moved to Canada, where he opened a corner store and later established a woodworking business, crafting cabinets, tables, cutting boards, and children’s toys with skill and pride. He worked tirelessly, sharing his knowledge and expertise with his children, teaching them to drive, safely use tools, and develop a strong work ethic.
Choy is survived by his loving wife, Ivy Tenn; his four sons—David (and Kelly), Dennis, Carlton (and Mary), and Codrington (Henry and Lisa); and his eight cherished grandchildren—Tiffany, Sterling, Logan, Lucas, Celeste, Ashley, Nathaniel, and Aiden.
Choy Tenn’s life was a testament to perseverance, courage, and love. From a child who faced loss and hardship, to a self-made businessman, devoted husband, and proud father and grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held to celebrate his life. Details will be shared with friends and family.
Love you always, Dad. Your strength, your story, and your love will forever remain in our hearts.
