Chong Chuang Ling, 80, of Toronto, Ontario, passed away peacefully on June 19th, 2026.
He was born in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia on December 27, 1945. The oldest of 6 children (5 brothers and 1 sister), Chong had big dreams for himself and his family. He moved away from home at 14 years old to join and work for the Boy Scouts.
Early on he knew his career path and pursued it and in 1969 he graduated as civil structural engineer from Technical College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 1972, Chong became a lifetime member of the British Institution of Chartered Structural Engineers (MIStructE) when he passed its 7-hour exam.
In 1968, Chong met his future wife, Audrey, through a friend. They were married in a Methodist Church in Kuala Lumpur in 1971.
After the birth of their first daughter, EeVon, they would set off on their ultimate adventure - immigrating to Canada in 1975. Chong became a Registered Professional Engineer (APEO) that same year. They got their first apartment in Niagara Falls where Chong worked for W.P. London and Associated Ltd (1975 - 1983). Their second daughter, the late Tan-yar, was born in 1977. Chong’s work would later move them to St. Catharines and then Sudbury in 1986. He would continue working as an engineer for 25 years. In that time he also sponsored his mother and youngest brother Sonny as immigrants to Canada in the mid-80’s.
The family loved to travel, especially by car and so as a young family they took many summer road trips throughout Ontario, Quebec and the U.S.
He and Audrey were active members of St. Paul’s United Church (Sudbury) - singing in the choir and participating in church social events. As Chair of Care and Fellowship, Chong visited church members in the hospital and nursing homes. Socially he enjoyed singing a Karaoke-style Mandarin song at the Annual Chinese New Year celebration.
In 2010, Chong retired at age 63. He and Audrey moved to Toronto to be close to their daughters and their families. Chong spent the next 9 years as an evangelist, giving out “The Way to God” booklets in Toronto, Mississauga and Scarborough malls.
In July 2024, Chong was diagnosed with Multi-System Atropht - a very rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the nervous system. The caring staff at St. George’s Care Community, where Chong resided from November 2025 to May 2026, loved his positive mindset - never complained and always looked to the bright side in face of adversity. Despite the rapid progression of his condition, he was quick to smile and very brave.
He is survived by his wife Audrey (Phaik Har Lim) of 55 years, his older daughter EeVon and her family (Husband Corey and their children Keira and Olivia), his late daughter Tan-yar’s family (Husband Claudio and their child Sasha) and by his siblings their families: brother William and sister Lay Ai in Houston, brother Sonny in St. Catharines and the families of his late brothers Chong Kian in Malaysia, Alfred in Houston
