With great sadness, we announce the passing of the rock of our family, Carmela Ida Aquino (nee Totera) on Monday, May 9 at the age of 76. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 52 years, Raffaele. Cherished mother of Angie Aquino (Paul Asturi), Frank Aquino (Sandra Petrongolo) and pre-deceased by her second child, Maria. Devoted grandmother of Stephan, Michael, Matthew, Natalie and Erica -- her grandchildren gave her tremendous joy.

Carmela was born on November 2, 1934 in Cerisano, Cosenza in the Province of Calabria in Italy. Given that November 2nd is All Souls Day, her parents (Giuseppe Totera and Maria Greco) had her birth date registered as November 3rd instead. Immigrating to Canada in 1958, she settled in Toronto and sponsored her husband-to-be, Raffaele, to join her the following year. They married on June 27, 1959 and lived a life of hard work and dedication to their family. As a seamstress for 30 years, she took great pride in her work at Shirt Tales/Style Rite but always made her family her priority.

Her unshakeable faith in God gave her the strength to carry on in the most difficult of times. And in the best of times, she shared her happiness with everyone around her. She always put the needs of others before her own and expected nothing in return. Her spirit of giving and unconditional love was an inspiration to those that knew her.

She will be sadly missed by the many family and friends she touched. Her loss leaves a deep void in our hearts but we are grateful and proud of the fond memories she left behind and honoured to have had her in our lives.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation or to the Lung Association.
