Cally Charalambakis
December 7, 1933 - May 1, 2016
Cally passed away, with family by her side, at the North York General Hospital on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the age of 82. She was born in Ikaria, Greece and lived in both Thessalonika and Athens, Greece before emigrating to Canada in 1963. She met her husband, John, in Toronto where they married and had their family. Cally was a trained bookkeeper, but remained primarily a homemaker raising her two daughters. Cally excelled in many skills and hobbies. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and embroidering. She was an avid gardener and had a miraculous green thumb. She was able to revive plants that most others would have thrown out. Her husband and family will miss her excellent cuisine and baking. She played in a women's bowling league for many years and held the position of treasurer. She always looked forward to Tuesday's games and the social gatherings afterwards. Cally maintained an ancestral house on the island of Ikaria and spent 3 months every summer in that home. While there, she swam for about an hour each day in the sea. She was passionate about swimming in the sea. She also enjoyed music and theater and had many opportunities to explore both, particularly with her daughter Lydia, before she moved out west, but also with other family and friends in the last few years. Cally touched everyone she came in contact with and was loved by all. The nurses at North York General were all so good to her, as she was kind and sweet with them all. She called them "koukla", which in Greek means "doll" and they all loved that!
Cally will be profoundly missed by her beloved husband, John, her daughters, Lydia and Jean and her granddaughters, Callie and Philicia. She will also be greatly missed by her sister Mary and her nieces and nephews, Jim & Vasi, Stam & Mary and Athina and Nick. Cally had many, many close friends, too many to mention here, that were so fond of her and who will feel the deep sorrow of her passing. Her memory will live on in so many hearts. Everyone who knew Cally was truly blessed to have known such a beautiful person.
