It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bruce on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.
Bruce Vivian was born to Helen Effer and Lorne Bruce and was raised in his early years by his maternal grandparents, Sam and Alice Bednall. He was predeceased by his son, Jason Glen Vivian (1972–1992). Bruce is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Carol Ann; his sister, Diane Ryan; his daughters, Christy Vivian Lihou and Lisa Vivian; and his cherished grandchildren, Ryan and Kathryn Lihou. He will also be forever missed by his beloved “furbaby” Birdie, as well as many cousins and extended family.
Bruce grew up in downtown Toronto, attending Fern Avenue Public School and Parkdale Collegiate. He later settled in Don Mills, where he earned his CMA through night school, leading to a long and successful career in banking.
He spent his early summers at Lake Wilcox and winters skiing at the High Park ski hill, proudly recalling his $12.99 ski package from the Sears catalogue. Skiing became a lifelong passion. Bruce became the youngest ski patroller in Collingwood, taught with the Toronto Ski Club at Rouge Valley, and later enjoyed many years cottaging in Hidden Valley near Huntsville. There, he formed lasting friendships and was especially proud to win first place in the u100 category at the Muskoka Ski Club Championships.
Bruce was resourceful and practical, someone who truly knew the value of a dollar. A gifted handyman, he could fix just about anything and firmly believed that everything had a use!. He will be remembered as a friendly and warm guy who had a greeting for everyone, deeply loved his family, and always showed how much he cared.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at North York General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.
Private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pine Hills Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with speeches beginning at 3:00 p.m.
