With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Bill Merdzan on August 12, 2026, at the age of 67.

Bill was a devoted and loving father, partner, son, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague. He is lovingly remembered by his beloved children, Adrian and Alana (Conor) – the loves of his life who filled him with endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his partner Joanna, the mother of his children Louisa, his sister Susan (Bob), his nephew Alec (Christine), and his niece Stephanie, along with an extended family of relatives and friends who he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his mother Stefica and his father Stjepan.

Bill was born in Doboj, Bosnia & Herzegovina. He grew up in the city of Sarajevo but would spend summers in his family’s tiny village of Bivolje Brdo. He would always speak fondly of his experiences in the village, where there was no electricity and where his grandmother would spoil him with homemade delicacies. At the age of 9, without knowing English, he immigrated to Canada with his family. He would reminisce about the bonds he made while exploring Toronto's ravine system in the summers and playing shinny hockey at his community ice rink in the winters.

Bill’s warmth, generosity, and larger-than-life personality touched everyone he met. He had a remarkable gift for bringing people together and for making everyone feel great in his presence. He could be both the life of the party, as well as a trusted and loyal friend. His greatest joy was spending time with the people he loved. He enjoyed being by the water, surrounded by nature, and travelling to interesting places. He also loved adventurous and exhilarating activities like skydiving, paragliding, ziplining, water skiing, sailing, and bike riding, to name a few. He walked the full Camino de Santiago in five weeks, climbed Slovenia’s highest peak of Mount Triglav on a whim, and completed the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru while insisting that he carry his own 15-kg pack.

Throughout a successful career in project management and consulting, Bill earned the respect, admiration, and friendship of many colleagues and clients. His ability to connect with people was unmatched, and he was always the “go-to” professional for solving problems and going the extra mile. He was multi-talented and could tackle anything he put his mind to. He knew how to build and renovate houses and he helped many friends and family members with their renovation projects just for the fun of it. He volunteered using his many skills with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry.

Bill was an extremely sensitive, compassionate man with a highly attuned emotional intelligence that made him happiest when others were happy too. His enthusiasm for life was infectious and worked magic in making others excited alongside him. Whether cracking a joke with a stranger, lending a hand to someone in need, or singing (shouting) at the top of his lungs, he lived life to the fullest in a manner that was unapologetically true to himself.

While his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, his memory will live on in the stories shared, the traditions carried forward, and the countless lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. May there always be music where he is, especially the music of his idol Bruce Springsteen!
