Beverley Ann Stewart
May 19, 1938 - June 13, 2013
At the age of 75, Beverley died on June 13, 2013 following a valiant struggle with cancer during which her courage and positive spirit provided inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her long-time friend and companion, Mary Ellen Blanch, sisters Barbara Etherington (Bill) and Elizabeth Stewart, nieces Jill Etherington (Matthew Tennant) and Rebecca Spence, nephews Michael Etherington and John Spence, and great-niece and great-nephew Kate and Jack Tennant. Thanks to the loving care and devotion of Mary Ellen, Beverley was able to realize her desire to spend her final weeks at home in peace and comfort.
During her working life, Beverley loved both teaching and learning. Her teaching career began as an elementary teacher in Cornwall. She then moved to Ottawa where she completed requirements for her B.A. and M.Ed. degrees, conferred by the University of Ottawa, which enabled her to teach English to students at several Ottawa high schools. Her most exciting teaching experience resulted from having been selected to teach students on Department of National Defence bases in Soest and Lahr, Germany. While there, she took advantage of all available opportunities to travel further abroad where she attracted lifelong friends. Attending regular DND reunions became an annual ritual when Beverley returned to Ottawa.
After her retirement, Beverley relocated to Toronto where she pursued her interest in theatre, both locally and by regular trips to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. She continued to explore the world and treasured good times and good friends wherever she travelled.
"Bevie" was unfailingly ready for fun with friends or family. She delighted everyone with her kindness, generosity, sense of humour, infectious laugh and radiant smile, qualities that endured despite her illness. She will be in our hearts always.
In accordance with Beverley's wishes, cremation has taken place followed by a private family interment service at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations in Beverley's memory may be made to the United Way or to a charity of your choice.
