August 26, 1920 – March 23, 2015

Peacefully at OTMH on March 23, 2015 in her 95th year.
Beryl Smith (nee Blick) was born in Handsworth, England, and came to Canada in 1946 with Flight-Lieutenant Harry F. E. Smith as a war bride. She soon embraced her new life and all things Canadian, from enjoying our hot Canadian summers, eating corn on the cob, to cottaging and watching Leafs and Blue Jays games. In addition to being a loving wife to Harry (deceased) and mother to Valerie (Bob) and George (Sandra), she was a wonderful Nana to her granddaughters Allison and Kaitlin.
Beryl was truly a ‘Super Mom’. She did it all…..she had a profession, she looked after all the family’s needs, cooked and baked, gardened, sewed, knitted, and filled the house with flowers and many nick knacks.
Christmas was everything children could ever dream of. It was pure magic! The house was full of food and excitement and anticipation from late October when the Christmas cakes were baked and put away, until the tree (always a real Scotch Pine) was taken down after the New Year’s celebration.
Family gatherings were always a priority with her and it was a marvel how effortlessly she could put a beef tenderloin or full turkey dinner on the table.
As a Physiotherapist, she empowered her patients and gave them the confidence they needed to get better. They loved her dearly because she honestly cared about them and some actually became life long friends. She had great deep inner strength and amazingly positive nature. No problem was too difficult to overcome. Her boundless energy and selfless, caring attitude were remarkable to all who knew her. Beryl had a formidable personality yet was fun loving with a quick wit and a beautiful smile. She touched peoples’ lives, personally and professionally, wherever she went.
For the past twelve years Beryl was a resident at Sunrise Assisted Living in Oakville where she received loving care, especially as she grew older and less mobile. In spite of physical challenges, Beryl never complained and greeted every day with cheerful optimism. Our family wants to thank the staff at Sunrise for making Beryl’s final years enjoyable especially her personal caregivers Marsha and Shirl Ann.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at The Simple Alternative, 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga, on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Etobicoke Humane Society in Beryl’s name.
