With profound sadness and heartbreak, we announce the passing of our beloved Betty Bustos (née Castañeda) on May 4, 2026, at the age of 77. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her husband and daughters, following a courageous months-long battle with cancer.
Born in Chepén, Peru, Betty carried the warmth, vibrancy, and spirit of her roots with her all throughout life. In the 1970’s, she moved briefly to the United States before immigrating to Canada, marrying in 1972, and proudly becoming a Canadian citizen in 1975.
She shared her life's journey with her devoted husband, Juan, whom she loved from the moment they met as teenagers in Pacasmayo, Peru. Together, they lived in Toronto and Etobicoke before ultimately settling in Mississauga to build a life and a family. This year, Betty and Juan would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary – a testament to their love, loyalty, and partnership.
Betty was the cherished mother of Michelle (and Shawn Dalrymple) and Jennifer (and Tom Starfas). Nothing brought her greater joy than being “Abi” to her treasured granddaughters, Zoë and Mia, who were the light of her life. She leaves behind her sisters Mirtha, Elizabeth and Isabel, her brother Hector, and many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly. Embracing her in heaven are her mother Rosa Isabel and her father Severo, along with her brothers and sisters Olga, Rosita, Juanito, Mario, Jorge and Cesitar.
Betty was truly unforgettable. Elegant, stylish, and full of energy, she had a vibrant personality, a magnetic presence, and dance moves that could light up any room. She loved to travel and embraced every opportunity to explore new places and create memories with loved ones.
Above all, Betty valued family. She devoted herself completely to the people she loved and took immense pride in caring for them. We will miss her immensely empathetic spirit, her incredible traditional Peruvian cooking and the special way she made everyone feel welcomed, included, and part of the family.
Though our hearts are broken, we are endlessly grateful for the memories, laughter, traditions, and unconditional love. We take comfort in knowing that Betty's devout Catholic faith, and her deep devotion to la Virgen de Guadalupe and el Señor de los Milagros, carried her through every season of life, including this next phase of her journey. She will be greatly missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
In memory of Betty, flowers may be sent to the funeral home. Those wishing to honour her life through a memorial donation are invited to contribute to her granddaughter Zoë’s Relay For Life cancer fundraiser, supporting continued cancer research and care.
