Born June 26, 1938, in the gentle countryside of Cheshire, England, Berenice embodied grace, resilience, and deep devotion to family. At age nine, she moved to Canada, growing up in Toronto, East York, and Scarborough.
Daughter of the late James and Catharina Christian, she is survived by her loving siblings Michael (Louise), Gregory (Kathy), and Peter (Judy). In 1955, she married Cyril Lewer, who sadly passed away a year later. In 1958, she found love again with George Tobin, with whom she built a warm, lively home. Berenice was the heart of her family, raising eight children: Philip (Donna), Sandra, Nadine, Scott, Ann (Cedrick), twins Nigel (Diane) and Barry, and Jennifer. Her love extended to her grandchildren—Gabrielle, Jocelynne, James, Amy, Jason, Shantell, Amanda (Mike Kelly), Christian, and Shelby—and great-grandchildren: Jinora, Hennry, Luc, Sophia, Xavier, Grace, and Quinn. Before motherhood, she worked as a Bell Canada switchboard operator and later at a local service station. But her greatest joys were found at home—in her garden and in the pages of a good book.
Berenice was a devoted gardener whose front yard bloomed with color and life. She had a natural gift for nurturing plants, and her garden became a peaceful, welcoming space for neighbors and friends alike. Tending to it brought her joy and calm. She was also an avid reader, often found with a novel in hand and a cup of tea nearby. Her love of books brought her comfort, inspiration, and quiet moments of reflection throughout her life.
Berenice will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, and the beauty she cultivated—in her garden, her home, and the hearts of all who knew her.
Forever cherished. Forever missed.
