With great sadness, we announce the passing of Bengt Ingvar Albin Sormon. Bengt passed peacefully with his family by his side, weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday. Born to Elsie and Oscar Sormon on February 16, 1935, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Bengt crossed the Atlantic at 24 years old to start a new life in Toronto, Canada. Meeting the love of his life, Terry, in 1968, Bengt and Terry shared more than 56 years together with two loving and wonderful children, Kevin and Mariko, the foundation of his happiness.
Bengt had a distinguished career in engineering. He earned his P.Eng. designation from the University of Toronto in 1968, followed by an MBA from York University in 1977, all while working at Trane Canada. Starting as a draftsman, he steadily advanced to Vice President of Manufacturing, leaving a lasting impact on the company. After retiring, Bengt channeled his engineering expertise into his many hands-on passions, from rebuilding motorcycles to woodworking. He crafted beautiful furniture, meticulously designed detailed model ships—constructing every component by hand—and even built a birchbark canoe in 1975, carefully shaping each rib and plank from trees he sourced in Northern Ontario.
Bengt’s love of motorcycles began with a basket of Triumph parts, which he transformed into two fully rideable bikes. This sparked a lifelong passion, leading to countless scenic rides across Ontario, the Maritimes, the Appalachians and forging deep friendships within the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group. His commitment to weightlifting spanned over 60 years, contributing to his remarkable strength and vitality. Three times a week, he could be found at Alfie’s Gym, later at Riverdale Fitness, and finally at Hone Fitness on the Danforth, often accompanied by Terry, who joined him for many years.
Bengt is survived by his wife Terry, children Mariko (late Trevor) and Kevin (Gabriella); grandchildren Evelyn and Quentin. Predeceased by his sister Sylvi and brother Stig. Will be missed sorely by the Yabu clan: Tomoko, Helen, Jessie (Rick), Keiji, George (Glenn) and many nieces and nephews in Toronto, Colorado, and Sweden. The family wishes to thank the palliative care team at Sunnybrook Hospital for taking care of Bengt in his final days.
