Barun Kumar Chatterjee of Mississauga, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 5, at Trillium Mississauga Hospital.
He was born in Calcutta, India in 1938 (but may actually have been 4 years older). Son of the late Bibhuti Chatterjee and Maya Mukherjee.
Barun spent his childhood and adolescence in India. As a young man, he travelled to Europe with his paternal aunt who worked for the French Consulate. He lived briefly in Paris and then studied in Germany. It was there that he met his wife Sigrid, and they were married in Hannover, Germany. They raised two daughters, Bani, and Dinah. In 1967, the whole family immigrated to Canada, for a fresh start and new opportunities. He attended Ryerson Polytechnic Institute and completed a program in Mechanical Technology and received his Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). He worked for many years as a Millwright at Federal Bolt and Nut. Barun made many dear friends while at work and many of them mentioned how he had helped them in some way. He was very sociable and played on the company baseball and bowling teams.
Throughout the years, he would travel back to India to spend time with family. This was an exciting time for his family back home, as all the members would travel great distances just so they could all be together when he arrived. He was so loved.
He had always been a "Numbers Guy” and worked part-time doing bookkeeping and preparing income tax returns. In the late 80’s he went back to school and changed his career to Financial Planner at Templeton and later at Regal Capital Planners. He started the “working from home” concept decades before it became “a thing” by meeting clients in his basement office, which he also called, “The Goldmine”. He had many clients over the years, and they were quite disappointed when he finally decided to retire.
Retirement was truly his favourite chapter in his life! He was overjoyed to become a grandfather to Jonathan and Jordan. These years were filled with family gatherings and celebrations, going out for dim sum, and his other passion, travelling! He travelled all over Europe and to the U.S. with his best friends, Joe and Monilal, always bringing back a special souvenir for his grandsons. He was also an avid fisherman and developed many close friendships with his fishing buddies.
In his later years he loved to spend time outside on the patio, in the sunshine or going for walks around the neighbourhood. He loved to watch cooking shows and to listen to his favourite music, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Dean Martin, and Kishore Kumar with Lata Mangeshkar. He would still light up when his grandsons and granddaughter-in-law came for a visit. Being around conversations, laughter and music, made him smile.
He leaves behind his wife, Sigrid Chatterjee (nee Heisig) of 60 years. He will be dearly missed by his daughter Bani (Ronnie), his daughter Dinah (Dominic), his grandsons, Jonathan (Maddi), and Jordan. He leaves behind his younger brother Arun Kumar (Bithika), his younger sister, Lalita (Subrata), and niece Sunandita, and nephews, Surajit and Abhijeet. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins and friends as well as friends we call family.
A private cremation will be held to honour his Hindu heritage.
On Saturday August 30, Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life in honour of Barun Chatterjee, which will be held at 1300 Bloor Street in Mississauga, L4Y3Z2, in the Jasper Room (C Level) between 2pm and 7pm.
