Barbara North (née Simmons) passed away on February 7, 2026, at the age of 85, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.
Born on August 16, 1940, Barbara pursued a lifelong calling in nursing. She graduated from the Toronto East General School of Nursing in 1962 and began her career at East General Hospital, where she served with dedication until 1978. She continued her work at North York General Hospital, retiring in 1998. Even in retirement, her commitment to care never wavered — she volunteered with NYGH until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
In 1963, she married Robert North, beginning a partnership that spanned more than 60 years. Together, they built a life rich in travel, lively gatherings with friends, and the joy of raising their family.
Barbara was a loving mother to Chris (Lisa) and Karen, and a proud grandmother to Meghan (Dean), Caitlyn, Victoria, and Douglas.
Her passion for nursing and service shaped not only her career but also the many lasting friendships she formed along the way. She will be remembered as a respected leader, a compassionate caregiver, and a steadfast friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Jubilee United Church, 40 Underhill Drive. The service will begin at 1:00 p.m.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Doctors Without Borders Canada in lieu of flowers. With sincere appreciation, the North family thanks all who stood by Barbara in friendship and love.
