Barbara Wynne Kormos

 September 21, 1950 – September 5, 2011

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara, beloved wife of Jim for 39 years, and loving mother of Christine; predeceased by her father, James Staveley, and survived by her mother, Winifred Staveley, her sisters Jennifer Staveley (Keith Watson) and Anne Phillips, and her brother Ross Burns (Ann Burns). She will also be greatly missed by her in-laws, her much-loved nieces and nephews, her dear friends, and her treasured poodle, Plato. Although her loving care, sharp wit, and insightful advice will be profoundly missed, memories of her love will remain a comfort for us.

Barbara was born in Belleville, Ontario, attended Belleville Collegiate Institute & Vocational School, and graduated with a B.Sc.(Hons.) from Queen’s University. She worked as an Occupational Therapist in Kingston, Peterborough, and, for many years, Toronto.

Barbara lived courageously with advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer (Insulinoma) for five years. Despite being the fastest growing class of cancer worldwide, it is often misdiagnosed, thereby limiting treatment options at the time of proper diagnosis. Her grace, optimism, and laughter throughout this difficult time have been an inspiration to us all.

We deeply appreciate the many excellent doctors and nurses involved in Barb’s care in Toronto (Princess Margaret Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital), London, Ontario (London Regional Cancer Centre), and London, England (the Royal Free Hospital, for specialized nuclear medicine treatment not available on this continent).

The Visitation will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery & Visitation Centre (east gate entrance, 375 Mt. Pleasant Rd., north of St. Clair Ave., Toronto, 416-485-5572) on Saturday, September 10th from 6 – 9 p.m. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held in the on-site Chapel on Sunday, September 11th at 1 p.m. Online condolences can be expressed at www.etouch.ca.

If desired, donations to the Carcinoid NeuroEndocrine Tumor Society Canada would be appreciated and can be made through www.cnetscanada.org.
