It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Avril Jensen on April 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Avril is survived by her daughter Rachael and her partner Geoff. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother David and his wife Hazel, her sister-in law Chris, and extended family in England and Denmark. She is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Johannes, who passed away in 2025, her youngest daughter, Karen, who passed away in 2022, and her brother Alun who passed away in 2025.
Avril was born and raised in England alongside her two older brothers. In 1967, at the age of 25, she emigrated to Toronto. She trained and worked as a Registered Nurse in England before continuing her dedicated career in Toronto. Avril possessed a genuine love for nursing and helping others, taking her job seriously and demonstrating a remarkable ability to anticipate her patients' needs.
While in Toronto, she met her beloved husband, Johannes, and they married in 1971. In 1978, they moved to North York, where they raised their two daughters. Avril paused her nursing career to focus on raising her children, during which time she was an active participant in their school programs and functions. She later returned to work part-time, dedicating 20 years to St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital in North York.
Avril was a woman of superb humour, sharp wit, and a bright smile. She was an avid Blue Jays fan who greatly enjoyed watching the games. A cherished daily ritual involved having a cup of tea and a sweet treat with Johannes on the back deck at 3 p.m. in good weather, often joined by George, the cat.
We will remember her with much love and are forever thankful for a life well lived. We are comforted knowing she has gone to heaven where Johannes and Karen are waiting for her.
A memorial service will be held at the Danish Lutheran Church of Toronto at 72 Finch Avenue West, North York, Ontario, M2N 2H4 on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 11 a.m.
The family will be thankful for any donations to be made in Avril's memory to be direct to Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) or the Canadian Lymphedema Framework (CLF)
